Making print clear and comfortable to read

Text Box: Around the year 1890 people talked about “word blindness”. They meant a person who had normal vision, but who found when doing reading that they almost became blind to the words, which went blurry, moved around, disappeared etc.

More recently the word “dyslexia” has been in common use. Sometimes it just meant a person who was having reading problems. For other people it meant a person who was having perceptual problems — problems in getting the message from the eyes to the brain. For others again it meant much the same as word blindness.

Today we more exactly describe the problem as “The Irlen Syndrome”. It means a person who has word blindness type symptoms, and who is greatly helped by the use of colour, as one of the main reasons for the problem is white light and white paper.

Benefits : With the use of colour over the page, or coloured tinted glasses (with the exact right tint) these are some of the benefits that usually result :

Enjoying reading more
Reading for a longer time without being uncomfortable
Being able to think about the meaning while you are reading - leading to better comprehension.
Less headaches – if you get headaches as a result of reading.

If we can do all of these, it should help you become a better reader

Most of the people that come to us can be helped by the use of colour. We do not encourage people to come unless we are reasonably sure that they are showing Irlen Syndrome symptoms—this can be determined in the free phone consultation
